What are dental veneers?

iStock_000005171088_LargeDental veneers are also known as Porcelain veneers and are different to crowns in that they are only attached to the front of the tooth. They are a very thin layer of porcelain used purely for the front teeth, and need a large surface area of tooth to be securely attached. The benefit of a veneer over a crown is that much less of the tooth needs to be filed to fit them, and they can be used in cases of less extreme tooth damage.

What is the procedure for dental veneers?

Porcelain veneers require a few trips to the dentist, as they are custom made for your teeth. Firstly, you should come in to Station Square Dental to discuss your specific issues and needs. We will examine your teeth, take x-rays if necessary, and discuss in detail with you whether veneers are the right choice.

The next step is for us to remove around half a millimetre of enamel from your tooth or teeth, as this is approximately the thickness of the veneer. Then impressions will be taken of your teeth and sent to the lab so that your veneer(s) can be made to fit your mouth exactly.

A week or two later, your final appointment will be to have them fitted. We will try the veneers on for size and undertake any trimming or reshaping that is necessary. Then, the surface of your teeth will be cleaned and polished, before being etched to create a rough surface for the cement to cling to. The veneer is then applied using special cement, and a light shone onto it to harden the cement quickly.

Do dental veneers hurt?

Veneers are not painful, however the removal of enamel may cause some discomfort, and you can decide whether you want anaesthetic or not. Other than this, veneers can cause some sensitivity due to the removal of enamel from the tooth. You might find yourself feeling sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages when you didn’t before.

Are dental veneers right for me?

Every person is different and as such everybody needs different dental treatment. What works for some people may not work for others. People with bruxism, gum disease, or very thin enamel are not suitable candidates for veneers. Consult our team of experts at Station Square Dental to see if dental veneers are the right choice for you or perhaps another solution is better suited to your situation.
